IB Promotion and Graduation Requirements

Academic Years 2018-2021

Sagesse High School places strong emphasis on granting students a chance to benefit from the International Baccaluareate Diploma Programme (IBDP) provided they meet the requirements and regulations set by IB as well as the School’s Administration.

At SHS IB Diploma or Course students are expected to participitate in the curriculum as required and structured by the school. They must meet all the requirements for each subject, respect internal school deadlines and abide by all school regulations.

At Sagesse High School the IBDP is a two - year program which students follow during their IBDP I and IBDP II years. Students may follow the IB program in on of the following categories:

I) Diploma:   candidates who wish to complete the requirements of the IBDP.

II) Course:  candidates who do not wish to complete the requirements of the IBDP,  yet, are taking IB subjects.

Promotion within the two – year program and graduation at the end of the second year are subject to criteria and requirements, set by the School’s Administration, which must be met by the IB students.

I) Diploma

Students must study six subjects over a period of two years. The six subjects must be selected from the six groups, as required by IB and according to the choices offered at Sagesse High School. At least three and not more than four subjects being offered at higher level (HL) and the others at standard level (SL).

In addition to the six subjects, diploma candidates must:

1)    take the Theory of Knowledge course;

2)    complete the CAS as set by the CAS coordinator at school; 

3)    complete an extended essay in a subject of their choice. Work on the essay must be done under the direct supervision of an appropriate teacher at school.

Remark:    Authorization of a non-regular Diploma

IBDP students may apply, through the school, for a non-regular diploma provided they meet the conditions set by IB. If IB grants the student authorization to follow the non-regular diploma, then the student may study 4 subjects at higher level and 2 subjects at standard level.

Each academic subject is assessed on a scale of 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum) corresponding to a boundary on the SHS American Program (AP) percentile scale with 4 being the "passing grade". 

Promotion within the two – year program and graduation at the end of the second year are subject to criteria and requirements, set by the School’s Administration, which must be met by the IB students.

A-   IBDP I (Diploma candidate):

Throughout the IBDP I year the student’s academic achievement as well as his/her disciplinary performance will be continuously evaluated and the student will be allowed to continue in the DP and will eventually be promoted to IBDP II provided the following is met:

1-  IBDP I students whose total score is 24 points or above will be  allowed to continue as a Diploma candidate provided all the following requirements have been met:

a)    The cumulative average score in each subject is 80% (4/7) or above. If the cumulative average score in a subject is below 80, then the student has to sit for a qualifying exam in that subject. 

b)    The IBDP I Internal Assessment requirements of all six subjects as set by the subject teachers and the IB DP Coordinator have been completed.

c)    The IBDP I CAS program as set by the CAS coordinator has been completed.

d)    The IBDP I TOK and Extended Essay requirements as set by the teachers and the IB DP Coordinator have been completed.

e)    The maximum number of student absence per subject (5%) per year has not been exceeded.

f)     The student has not been found guilty of malpractice.

g)    The student upholds the school regulations and has not seriously violated them on any occasion throughout the IBDP I year.

2-  IBDP I students whose total score is less than 24 points will repeat IBDP I or be promoted to IBDP II as a Course candidate, based on the recommendation of the deliberation committee, provided the following requirements have been met:                          

a)    The student sits for make-up exams as recommended by the deliberation committee.

b)    The IBDP I Internal Assessment requirements of all six subjects as set by the subject teachers and the IB DP Coordinator have been completed.

c)    The IBDP I CAS program as set by the CAS coordinator has been completed.

d)    The IBDP I TOK and Extended Essay requirements as set by the teachers and the IB DP Coordinator have been completed.

e)    The maximum number of student absence per subject (5%) per year has not been exceeded.

f)     The student has not been found guilty of malpractice

g)    The student upholds the school regulations and has not seriously violated them on any occasion throughout the IBDP I year

IBDP I students who fail to meet the academic and/or disciplinary requirements at any time throughout the IBDP I year risk being disqualified from the Diploma Programme. A reevaluation of the student’s academic and disciplinary performances is carried out and a decision is reached as to whether the student is shifted to the IB Course candidate programme or in extreme cases is dismissed from school.

B-  IBDP II (Diploma candidate):

Throughout the IBDP II year the student’s academic achievement as well as his/her disciplinary performance will be continuously evaluated. The student will be allowed to continue in the DP and will be registered as a DP candidate if:

a)    The student meets the conditions to be awarded a diploma as stated in the IB general regulations.

b)    A maximum number of student absence per subject (5%) per year has not been exceeded

c)    The student upholds the school regulations and has not seriously violated them on any occasion throughout the IBDP II year. 

d)    The student has taken the SAT 1 test. 

IBDP II Diploma students who do not completely satisfy the above conditions will be considered as risky cases and will be either shifted to the Course candidate Programme or continue in the Diploma Programme as out of school statistics candidates. This is decided based on the feedback from the teachers and the approval of the Rector.

IMPORTANT REMARKS:

• If a candidate is found guilty of malpractice, the school is entitled to decide that the candidate will not be permitted to register for the IB examinations.
• The school administration is entitled to decide, at any point, that an IB candidate will be excluded from the school statistics if the candidate’s academic level and or discipline are not up to the standards set by the administration. If such a case arises after the IB final registration deadline, then the parents or guardians of the candidate will have to pay the school any extra fees incurred by IB.
• IBDP II Diploma students who fail to meet the academic and/or disciplinary requirements at any time throughout the IBDP II year risk being disqualified from the Diploma Programme. A reevaluation of the student’s academic and disciplinary performances is carried out and a decision is reached as to whether the student is shifted to the IB Course candidate programme or in extreme cases is dismissed from school. It is worth mentioning that if such cases arise after the IB final registration deadline, then the parents or guardians of the candidate will have to pay the school any extra fees incurred by IB. In addition, the school will not refund any payments whatsoever.
• All IBDP II students must at least meet the graduation requirements of the Course Candidate Programme to graduate from SHS.
• Serious violations of the school regulations will result in the dismissal of the student. Thus the student will not be allowed to sit for the IB official exams, will not be awarded a High School Diploma and will not graduate from Sagesse High School.

II) Course Candidate 

Students must study six subjects over a period of two years. The six subjects must be selected from the six groups, as required by IB and according to the choices offered at Sagesse High School. At least three and not more than four subjects being offered at higher level (HL) and the others at standard level (SL). A Course candidate may opt to take as many SL subjects as he/she chooses.

In addition to the six subjects, Course candidates may:

1)    take the Theory of Knowledge course.

2)    complete the CAS as set by the CAS coordinator.

3)    complete an extended essay in a subject of their choice. Work on the essay must be done under the direct supervision of a qualified teacher at school.

Throughout the IBDP I year the student’s academic achievement as well as his/her disciplinary performance will be continuously evaluated and the student will be allowed to continue in the Course Candidate Programme and will eventually be promoted to IBDP II provided the following is met:

1- IBDP I Course candidates whose total score is 24 points or above will be allowed to continue in the Course Candidate Programme provided all the following requirements have been met:

a)  The cumulative average score in each subject is 80 or above. If the cumulative average score in a subject is below 80, then the student has to sit for a qualifying exam in that subject. 

b)  The IBDP I Internal Assessment requirements of all six subjects as set by the subject teachers and the IB DP Coordinator have been completed.

c)  The IBDP I CAS program as set by the CAS coordinator has been completed.

d)  The IBDP I TOK and Extended Essay requirements (if applicable) as  set by the teachers and the IB DP Coordinator have been completed.

e)  The maximum number of student absence per subject (5%) per year has not been exceeded.

f)   The student has not been found guilty of malpractice.

g)   The student upholds the school regulations and has not seriously violated them on any occasion throughout the IBDP I year.

2- IBDP I Course candidates whose total score is less than 24 points will repeat the IBDP I year or be promoted to IBDP II with academic/disciplinary probation, based on the recommendation of the

deliberation committee, provided the following requirements have been met:                      

a) The student sits for make-up exams as recommended by the deliberation committee.

b) The IBDP I Internal Assessment requirements of all six subjects as set by the subject teachers and the IB DP Coordinator have been completed.

c) The IBDP I CAS program as set by the CAS coordinator has been completed.

d) The IBDP I TOK and Extended Essay requirements (where applicable)  as set by the teachers and the IBDP Coordinator have been completed.

e) The maximum number of student absence per subject (5%) per year has not been exceeded.

f) The student has not been found guilty of malpractice

g) The student upholds the school regulations and has not seriously violated them on any occasion throughout the IBDP I year

IBDP I Course candidates who fail to meet the academic and/or disciplinary requirements at any time throughout the IBDP I year risk being disqualified from the program. A reevaluation of the student’s academic and disciplinary performances is carried out and a decision is reached as to whether the student is asked to repeat the IBDP I year or in extreme cases is dismissed from school.

B-  IBDP II (Course candidate):

Throughout the IBDP II year the student’s academic achievement as well as his/her disciplinary performance will be continuously evaluated. The student will be allowed to continue in the Course Candidate Programme and will be registered as a Course candidate if:

b) The student meets the conditions to be awarded certificates as stated in the IB general regulations.

c) A maximum number of student absence per subject (5%) per year has not been exceeded

d) The student upholds the school regulations and has not seriously violated them on any occasion throughout the IBDP II year 

e) The student has taken the SAT 1 test.

IBDP II Course students who do not completely satisfy the above conditions will be considered as risky cases and will not be allowed to register as Course candidates. This is decided based on the feedback from the teachers and the approval of the Rector.

A reevaluation of the student’s academic and disciplinary performances is carried out and a decision is reached as to whether the student is asked to repeat the IBDP II year or in extreme cases is dismissed from school. It is worth mentioning that if such cases arise after the IB final registration deadline, then the parents or guardians of the candidate will have to pay the school any extra fees incurred by IB. In addition, the school will not refund any payments whatsoever.
• Serious violations of the school regulations will result in the dismissal of the student. Thus the student will not be allowed to sit for the IB official exams, will not be awarded a High School Diploma and will not graduate from Sagesse High School.

IBDP II GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Diploma Programme:

In order to be eligible for graduation, an IBDP II Diploma student must:

1.     have no more than 5% excused absences in a particular course and a record of regular attendance for previous years.

2.     have completed all internal assessment work as well as the IB core requirements (Extended essay, CAS, and TOK). 

3.     have a good disciplinary record.

4.     have numeric grades in all subjects.

5.     have taken the SAT 1 test [1].

6.     at least meet the conditions for graduating from the Course Candidate Programme. In case of a failing condition, students are allowed to sit for make-up exams in the subjects as needed in order to fulfill the graduation requirements of the Course Candidate Programme. 

Any student who fails to meet minimum requirements, or whose conduct is not deemed worthy or who does not abide by school regulations will not be allowed to attend the Commencement Exercises.

Course Candidate Programme:

In order to be eligible for graduation, an IBDP II Course candidate must:

1.     have no more than 5% excused absences in a particular course and a record of regular attendance for previous years.

2.     have completed all internal assessment work, CAS and where applicable the extended essay and TOK.

3.     have a good disciplinary record.

4.     have numeric grades in all subjects.

5.     have no subject cumulative average score below 80. Students are allowed to sit for makeup exams in the subjects as needed in order to fulfill the graduation requirements of the Course Candidate Programme. 

6.     have taken the SAT 1 test [2].

Any student who fails to meet minimum requirements, or whose conduct is not deemed worthy or who does not abide by school regulations will not be allowed to attend the Commencement Exercises.

[1] Since the SAT 1 & 2 scores are required by the Equivalency Committee of the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the school will inform and encourage students to sit for the SAT 1 & 2 tests.
